In a documentary covering King Charles’s first year as monarch, Princess Anne has disclosed Queen Elizabeth’s concerns about organizing her funeral if she died at Balmoral.

The documentary, set to air on BBC One on Boxing Day, features exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes footage.

QUEEN ELIZABETH II HAD CONCERNS OVER THE FUNERAL LOCATION

Princess Anne shared that the Queen was initially worried about the logistical challenges of arranging her funeral at Balmoral. However, her family persuaded her to follow her heart.

Anne spoke emotionally about her mother’s passing and the moment she witnessed the Imperial State Crown being removed from the Queen’s coffin at St George’s Chapel in Windsor.

Expressing a sense of relief, Anne said, “That responsibility being moved on.” Despite the initial concerns, many saw it as fitting that the Queen passed away at Balmoral due to her deep affection for the Scottish Highlands.

Dr Iain Greenshields, the moderator of the general assembly of the Church of Scotland, visited the Queen shortly before her death, noting her peace and pleasure in being at Balmoral.

Princess Anne also revealed the “pure serendipity” of being with the Queen when she passed away. She explained that she had stopped over at Balmoral Castle on her way back south after spending time on Scotland’s West Coast.

Addressing her sister-in-law Camilla, Anne praised her understanding of the royal role and the significant support she provides to King Charles. Anne commended Camilla for handling the role exceptionally well, providing a crucial change of speed and tone.

Reflecting on her brother’s preparation for ascending to the throne, Anne acknowledged the challenges he faced despite a lifetime of waiting. The documentary, written and co-produced by royal expert Robert Hardman, offers a unique insight into the royal family’s experiences over the past year.
